10th grade
As I sat there in English class, I stared at the girl next to me. She was my so called \, and wished she was mine. But she didn't notice me like that, and I knew it. After class, she walked up to me and asked me for the notes she had missed the day before and handed them to her. She said \t know why.
11th grade
The phone rang. On the other end, it was her. She was in tears, mumbling on and on about how her love had broke her heart. She asked me to come over because she didn't want to be alone, so I did. As I sat next to her on the sofa, I stared at her soft eyes, wishing she was mine. After 2 hours, one Drew Barrymore movie, and three bags of chips, she decided to go to sleep. She looked at me, said \I love her but I'm just too shy, and I don't know why.

What do consumers really want
What do consumers really want? That's a question market researchers would love to answer. But since people don't always say what they think, marketers would need direct access to consumers' thoughts to get the truth. And now, in a way, that is possible. Oh, I knowmIrm guessing there are single 30-year-old women reading this right now who will be writing letters to the editor to say that the women I know arenrt widely representative, that Irve been co-opted by the cult of the feminist backlash, and basically, that I have no idea what Irm talking about. And all I can say is, if you say yourre not worried, either yourre in denial or yourre lying. In fact, take a good look in the mirror and try to convince yourself that yourre not worried, because yourll see how silly your face looks when yourre being disingenuous.
Whether you acknowledge it or not, therers good reason to worry. By the time 35th-birthday-brunch celebrations roll around for still-single women, serious, irreversible life issues masquerading as "jokes" creep into public conversation: Well, I donrt feel old, but my eggs sure do! or Maybe this year Irll marry Todd. Irm not getting any younger! The birthday girl smiles a bit too widely as she delivers these lines, and everyone laughs a little too hard for a little too long, not because we find these sentiments funny, but because werre awkwardly acknowledging how unfunny they are. At their core, they pose one of the most complicated, painful, and pervasive dilemmas many single women are forced to grapple with nowadays: Is it better to be alone, or to settle?
